The Last Day's Essentials-24
What can believers expect in the Last Day's
Deception
Rom. 3:10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
This passage (Rom. 3:10-18) is from several Old Testament books on the same subject. Rom. 3:10-12 are from Psm. 14:2-3; 52:2-4; Ecc. 7:20. Rom. 3:13-18 are from Psm. 5:9-10; 10:7; 36:1-2; 140:3; Isa. 59:7-8.
Having stated (Rom. 3:9) that he had already proved both Jews and Gentiles to be under sin, he now proceeds to clinch this argument by the Jewish Scriptures which they could not deny.
No one is righteous in himself.
Now this is an amazing statement Paul is quoting from the Psalms, but this is an amazing statement that God has declared. He said, "There is none who are seeking after God." So often we hear people say, "Well, all religions lead to God. After all, if a person is sincere won’t God accept his sincerity? Look at the ways these people are seeking after God. You know, they cut themselves they afflict themselves. They spend these hours in meditation, surely God will accept them, because they are seeking after God." The scripture says they are not seeking after God. If they are not seeking after God, then what are they seeking after?
Rom. 3:11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.
Have turned away from Him (cf. Rom. 2:5; Isa. 53:5), are worthless (from achreioō, “become useless,” used only here in the NT), and do not do good (chrēstotēta, “kindness,” or “benevolence in action”; cf. 2CoR. 6:6; Gal. 5:22; and comments on Rom. 2:4). Apart from the indwelling Holy Spirit people cannot exhibit this fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22). They have no inner spiritual capacity whereby they can normally and automatically exercise genuine kindness toward others. Instead sin causes them to be selfish and self-centered.
The motivation behind most of this, as they will tell you, is that they are seeking after a peace of mind. Those who get into that meditation bit, they testify of that peace of mind, that tranquility that they come to, and that is what they are seeking is a tranquility of mind. They are not really seeking God, but seeking their own tranquility seeking their own peace.
Rom. 3:12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
This is true of all people (Isa. 53:6; Rom. 1:21-32; 3:23; 5:12-21).
unprofitable Greek: achreioo, to make useless. The whole mass of mankind is as a slain, putrid mass thrown together in heaps.
Now he goes on to quote many more scriptures. From the Psalms,
There is no one righteous Paul quotes Psm. 14:1–3 to support his argument that sin is common to both Jews and Greeks (Rom. 3:10–12). Some Jews may have objected to the claim that Jews and Gentiles were of equal standing before God with regard to sin. Paul’s conclusion simply affirms what the ot already says about humanity, sin, and righteousness.
He concludes that because of humanity’s universal sinfulness, the law does not lead to justification.
Rom. 3:13 Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips:
They deceive with their tongues Paul quotes Psm. 5:9 to illustrate the potentially harmful effects of words.
The Greek verb used here, dolioō, means “to flatter with intention to do evil.”
Now this is God’s indictment, God is speaking through the psalmist and declaring the condition of man apart from God.
