  1. Messiah would come from the line of Abraham.

Old Testament Scripture. Gen. 12:3; 22:18

New Testament Fulfillment. Mat. 1:1; Rom. 9:5

The Call of Abram

Gen. 12:3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

Bless the families of the earth through him (Gen. 12:3). To bless or curse Abram was to bless or curse Abram’s God. Unfortunately God often had to use other nations to discipline His people because, far from being a blessing to the world, they were usually disobedient. The third promise takes on its greatest fulfillment in the fact that Jesus Christ became the means of blessing to the world (Gal. 3:8, 3:16; cf. Rom. 9:5).

And I will bless...

The themes of blessing and cursing are heightened here. In fact this is the central passage of the Book of Genesis. Here begins the program that was so desperately needed in chapters 1-11 (a purpose of which was to show that this blessing was needed). This was the call; Abram responded to it by faith. The ensuing promises were formulated later, under covenant conditions (Gen. 15:8-21).

The Genealogy of Jesus Christ

Mat. 1:1 The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

Introduction of the King

A. Presentation by ancestry

From the very first words of his Gospel, Matthew recorded his central theme and character. Jesus Christ is the main character in Matthew’s presentation, and the opening verse connected Him back to two great covenants in Jewish history: the Davidic (2Sam. 7:1-29) and the Abrahamic (Gen. 12:1-20; 15:1-21). If Jesus of Nazareth is the fulfillment of these two great covenants, is He related to the rightful line? This is a question the Jews would have asked, so Matthew traced Jesus’ lineage in detail.

Rom. 9:5 Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.

God’s Righteousness Revealed in Sovereign Choice (chaps. 9-11)

Since God is the self-existent Being who is the Creator of everything that exists outside Himself, He is sovereign and can therefore use and dispose of His Creation as He wishes. This sovereignty reveals not only His personal righteousness but also His provided righteousness.

A. God’s sovereign choice enunciated

Paul here discussed God’s sovereign choice because of a practical problem. The Jews gloried in the fact that as Israelite's they were God’s Chosen People (Deu. 7:6; cf. Rom. 2:17-20; 3:1-2). But now in God’s program of salvation in the church, Jewish involvement was decreasing while Gentile participation was becoming dominant. Had God, then, abandoned the Jewish people? This is ultimately explained by God’s sovereign choice, a principle which has always been in operation even within the Chosen People of Israel and between Israel and other nations. Now this principle operates in God’s purposes for Israel and the church and in His dealings with Jews and Gentiles within the church.

1. Israel’s Privileges

By repetition in positive and negative terms (internally attested by the witness of his own conscience [cf. See on Rom. 2:15] in the presence of the Holy Spirit) Paul affirmed his deep anguish of heart over the rejection of the gospel by the vast majority of Jews. His desire for their salvation was so strong that he was at the point of wishing (imperf. tense, I could wish) that he were cursed and cut off from Christ for his kinsmen, the Israelite's.

Paul then listed seven spiritual privileges which belonged to the people of Israel as God’s chosen nation: the adoption as sons (cf. Exo. 4:22), the divine glory (cf. Exo. 16:10; 24:17; 40:34; 1Kgs. 8:11), the covenants (Gen. 15:18; 2Sam. 7:12-16; Jer. 31:31-34), the receiving of the Law (Deu. 5:1-22), the temple worship (latreia, “sacred service,” which may also include service in the tabernacle), and the promises (esp. of the coming Messiah). Also the Israelite's were in the line of promise from its beginning in the patriarchs (cf. Mat. 1:1-16; Rom. 1:3) to its fulfillment in the Messiah, who is God over all, forever praised! Amen. This is a clear affirmation of the deity of Messiah. Some take these words as a separate sentence (see NIV marg.), but the NIV text seems preferable.
