Messiah would be born of a virgin.

Old Testament Scripture Isaiah 7:14

New Testament Fulfillment Mat. 1:22; Luke 1:26-28 read to Vs. 31

Isa. 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Though Ahaz refused to request a sign that would have confirmed the truth of Isaiah’s message, the prophet said God would give him one anyway. The sign was to be a boy named Immanuel. Three elements pertain to the sign: (1) The boy would be born of a virgin (Isa. 7:14). (2) He would be raised in a time of national calamity (Isa. 7:15; on the curds and honey see Isa. 7:22). (3) While he was still a youth, the two-king alliance would be broken (Isa. 7:16).

Part of Speech: verb

The scripture sees the predicted birth as exclusively messianic and the virgin as Mary, Jesus’ mother. It is argued that in Isa. 7:14 the virgin is said to be with child (lit., “the virgin is or will be pregnant”). It is also argued that Matthew, stressing the fact that Joseph and Mary’s marriage was not consummated till after Jesus’ birth (Mat. 1:18, 1:25), affirmed that Jesus’ birth fulfilled Isaiah’s prophecy (Mat. 1:21-23).

עמּנוּאל

immânû'êl

Definition:

Immanuel = “God with us” or “with us is God”

1) symbolic and prophetic name of the Messiah, the Christ, prophesying that He would be born of a virgin and would be ‘God with us’

Part of Speech: noun proper masculine

Since Isaiah spoke this prophecy to the house of David (Isa. 7:13) and not just to Ahaz himself, the sign was given not just to the king but to the entire kingly line and the entire nation. However, if the fulfillment did not occur until Joseph and Mary’s day, how does the prophecy relate to Isaiah’s point that the Aram-Israel confederacy would soon be defeated? And how does the birth of the Lord Jesus relate to the eating of curds and honey (Isa. 7:15) and to the breaking of the alliance before the boy was old enough to know good and evil? (Isa. 7:16) Proponents of this view answer that the time is similar: the two years of Jesus’ babyhood (before He would know between right and wrong) point to the same time segment, two years, within which the Aram-Israel threat would be gone.

Mat. 1:22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,

Introduction of the King

A. Presentation by ancestry

From the very first words of his Gospel, Matthew recorded his central theme and character. Jesus Christ is the main character in Matthew’s presentation, and the opening verse connected Him back to two great covenants in Jewish history: the Davidic (2Sam. 7:1-29) and the Abrahamic (Gen. 12:1-20; 15:1-21). If Jesus of Nazareth is the fulfillment of these two great covenants, is He related to the rightful line? This is a question the Jews would have asked, so Matthew traced Jesus’ lineage in detail.

Presentation by advent

1. His Origin.

The fact that Jesus was born “of Mary” only, as indicated in the genealogical record (Mat. 1:16), demanded further explanation. Matthew’s explanation can best be understood in the light of Hebrew marriage customs. Marriages were arranged for individuals by parents, and contracts were negotiated. After this was accomplished, the individuals were considered married and were called husband and wife. They did not, however, begin to live together. Instead, the woman continued to live with her parents and the man with his for one year. The waiting period was to demonstrate the faithfulness of the pledge of purity given concerning the bride. If she was found to be with child in this period, she obviously was not pure, but had been involved in an unfaithful sexual relationship. Therefore the marriage could be annulled. If, however, the one-year waiting period demonstrated the purity of the bride, the husband would then go to the house of the bride’s parents and in a grand processional march lead his bride back to his home. There they would begin to live together as husband and wife and consummate their marriage physically. Matthew’s story should be read with this background in mind.

Mary and Joseph were in the one-year waiting period when Mary was found to be with child. They had never had sexual intercourse and Mary herself had been faithful (Mat. 1:20, 1:23). While little is said about Joseph, one can imagine how his heart must have broken. He genuinely loved Mary, and yet the word came that she was pregnant. His love for her was demonstrated by his actions. He chose not to create a public scandal by exposing her condition to the judges at the city gate. Such an act could have resulted in Mary’s death by stoning (Deu. 22:23-24). Instead he decided to divorce her quietly.

Then in a dream (cf. Mat. 2:13, 2:19, 2:22), an angel told Joseph that Mary’s condition was not caused by a man, but through the Holy Spirit (Mat. 1:20; cf. Mat. 1:18). The Child Mary carried in her womb was a unique Child, for He would be a Son whom Joseph should name Jesus for He would save His people from their sins. These words must have brought to Joseph’s mind the promises of God to provide salvation through the New Covenant (Jer. 31:31-37). The unnamed angel also told Joseph that this was in keeping with God’s eternal plan, for the Prophet Isaiah had declared 700 years before that the virgin will be with Child (Mat. 1:23; Isa. 7:14). While Old Testament scholars dispute whether the Hebrew almâh should be rendered “young woman” or “virgin,” God clearly intended it here to mean virgin (as implied by the Gr. word parthenos). Mary’s miraculous conception fulfilled Isaiah’s prophecy, and her Son would truly be Immanuel… God with us. In light of this declaration Joseph was not to be afraid to take Mary into his home (Mat. 1:20). There would be misunderstanding in the community and much gossip at the well, but Joseph knew the true story of Mary’s pregnancy and God’s will for his life.

Birth of Jesus Foretold

Luke 1:26 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

The Announcement Of The Birth Of Jesus

a. The introduction of Mary and Joseph

In the sixth month, that is, when Elizabeth was in her sixth month of pregnancy, God sent… Gabriel to Nazareth.

Mary had not yet had sexual contact with a man, for Luke called her a virgin (parthenon; cf. Luke 1:34) and noted that she was pledged to be married to… Joseph (cf. Luke 2:5). In Jewish culture then a man and woman were betrothed or pledged to each other for a period of time before the actual consummation of their marriage. This betrothal was much stronger than an engagement period today, for the two were considered husband and wife except that they did not live together till after the wedding.

Luke 1:27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.

See above.

Luke 1:28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.

The angel’s announcement of Jesus’ birth to Mary

The angel said that Mary was highly favored (kecharitōmenē, a part. related to the noun charis, “grace”; the verb charitoō is used elsewhere in the NT only in Eph. 1:6). Also Mary had found favor (charis, “grace”) with God. Obviously God had bestowed a special honor on her. She was a special recipient of His grace.

Gabriel’s admonition (Luke 1:30-31) was the same as to Zechariah: Do not be afraid, for you will have a Son (cf. Luke 1:13). As with John (Luke 1:13), the naming was by the angel (Luke 1:31).
