Messiah would be born in Bethlehem.
Old Testament Scripture Micah 5:2
New Testament Fulfillment Mat. 2:1; Luke 2:4-6
Mic. 5:2 But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.
Micah described the birth of the Ruler (Mic. 5:2) and His work on behalf of the nation (Mic. 5:3-15).
a. The birth of Israel’s Ruler (Mic. 5:2)
The pattern of this verse is similar in some ways to that in Mic. 4:8. In each verse, a city is personified and addressed as you; the words will come are in both verses; and deliverance is suggested by similar Hebrew words (trans. “dominion” in Mic. 4:8 and Ruler in Mic. 5:2). The “Ruler,” Christ, will be from Bethlehem Ephrathah, about five miles from Jerusalem. Ephrathah, also called Ephrath (Gen. 35:16-19; 48:7), was an older name for Bethlehem or the name of the area around Bethlehem. David was born in Bethlehem (1Sam. 16:1, 16:18-19; 17:12) as was His greatest Descendant, Jesus Christ (Mat. 2:1). The chief priests and teachers of the Law understood this verse in Micah to refer to the Messiah (Mat. 2:3-6). That confused some of the people in Jesus’ day (John 7:42) for though He was born in Bethlehem He was raised in Nazareth, in Galilee.

The Messiah-Ruler, who will deliver His people, was born in an insignificant, small town (not even mentioned in the list of towns in Jos. 15:1-63 or Neh. 11:1-36) where the clans of Judah lived. And God said this One, who will minister on Yahweh’s behalf (for Me), will be Israel’s “Ruler” (cf. “rule” in Mic. 4:7). Christ accomplished and will accomplish the Father’s will (cf. John 17:4; Heb. 10:7).

This Ruler’s origins (lit., “goings out,” i.e., His victories in Creation, theophanies, and providential dealings) are from of old, from ancient times. The Visit of the Wise Men

His Infancy
a. In Bethlehem
Though not all scholars agree on the timing of the arrival of the Magi from the East, they apparently came some time after the birth of Jesus. Jesus and Mary and Joseph, though still in Bethlehem, were now in a house (Mat. 2:11), and Jesus was called a Child (paidion, Mat. 2:9, 2:11) rather than a newborn Infant (brephos, Luke 2:12).
The exact identity of the Magi is impossible to determine, though several ideas have been suggested. They have been given traditional names and identified as representatives of the three groups of peoples that descended from Noah’s sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. More likely they were Gentiles of high position from a country, perhaps Parthia, northeast of Babylon, who were given a special revelation by God of the birth of the King of the Jews. This special revelation may simply have been in the sky, as might be indicated by their title “Magi” (specialists in astronomy) and by the fact they referred to a star which they saw. Or this revelation could have come through some contact with Daniel or Jewish scholars who had migrated to the East with copies of Old Testament manuscripts. Many feel the Magi’s comments reflected a knowledge of Balaam’s prophecy concerning the “star” that would “come out of Jacob” (Num. 24:17). Whatever the source, they came to Jerusalem to worship the newborn King of the Jews. (According to tradition three Magi traveled to Bethlehem. But the Bible does not say how many there were.)
Luke 2:4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)
For the census Joseph and Mary went to Bethlehem, Joseph’s ancestral home. Joseph was a descendant of David (cf. Luke 1:27), who was born in Bethlehem. Some have argued that it seems strange that people were not registered in the places where they currently lived. However, other instances of the same practice are known (see I. Howard Marshall, The Gospel of Luke, pp. 101-2). Mary accompanied Joseph for several reasons. The couple knew she would have the Baby during the time Joseph was gone, and they most likely did not want to be separated at that event. Also both of them knew that the Child was the Messiah. They also would have known that the Messiah was to be born in Bethlehem (Mic. 5:2).
Luke 2:5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.
See above.
Luke 2:6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.
The Child was born during their time in Bethlehem. The fact that Jesus was called Mary’s firstborn implies that later she had other children. The couple was housed in quarters which were not private. According to tradition, they were in a cave near the inn. The Child was placed… in a manger, from which livestock fed. Being wrapped in strips of cloth was important, for this was the way the shepherds would recognize the infant (Luke 2:12). Some infants were bound up in that way to keep their limbs straight and unharmed.
