The Full Assurance of Faith

Heb. 10:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

Consider each other to provoke each other to love, to good works, and then not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, in order that we might receive exhortation. Actually, he is saying we should gather together all the more as we see the day of the Lord approaching. So I don’t know how we can do any more than we are every night of the week around here and during the day, but anyhow . . . That’s the purpose of gathering and assembling ourselves together is for mutual encouragement, the strengthening of each other, the exhorting of each other.

by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. This could refer to both comings—the coming in the air for the saints (see, 1Th. 3:13; 4:13-18), and the coming of the Lord to the earth with the saints (see, Mat. 24:3).

gathering together. Greek: episunagoge, a gathering together in one place (2Th. 2:1; Heb. 10:25; cp. the verb in Mat. 23:37; 24:31). Here is a gathering together to Him in the air (1Th. 4:13-18). This could only refer to the rapture, not the second coming.

It would seem here that some had forsaken the Christian gatherings, perhaps because of the persecutions referred to in Heb. 10:32-33.

Christians should exhort one another to faithfulness, more and more, as the day of Christ draws near (see, 1Cor. 1:8).

In any case their mutual efforts to spur one another on should increase as they see the Day approaching (cf. Heb. 10:37; a well-known NT trilogy is included in these vv.: faith, Heb. 10:22; hope, Heb. 10:23; love, Heb. 10:24).

In referring again to the Second Advent, the writer left the impression he was concerned that genuine believers might cease to hope for the Lord’s coming and be tempted to defect from their professions of faith in Christ; They must treat their future expectations as certainties (since He who promised is faithful). If they would only lift up their eyes, they could “see the Day approaching.”

Blameless... Greek: anengkletos, not accused, unimpeachable. Here; Col. 1:22; 1Tim. 3:10; Tit. 1:6-7.

day of our Lord Jesus Christ... In the day when Christ comes to receive saints unto Himself (1Cor. 1:8; 5:5; 2Cor. 1:14; Php. 1:6, 1:10; 2:16).
